Small aerodromes have expanses of grass, with hedgerows and large areas of undisturbed ground. This can provide havens for flora and fauna, and wildlife that might otherwise be exterminated by building site developments.
Flying sites can support a surprising amount of wildlife. Grassy areas may harbour wild flowers and be home to small mammals which are food for birds of prey. A recent survey listed no fewer than 105 species of plant found on a small grass airfield in the south of England.
